Nicotine Pouches and ZYNfluencers

While cigarette smoking may be on the decline, overall nicotine use is not. As nicotine pouches, such as ZYN, become more popular among young adults as a smoking alternative, it is important to remember that while they are smoke-free, they are not risk-free.

What are Nicotine Pouches

Nicotine pouches are small, porous receptacles placed inside the mouth against the gums. They contain non-tobacco nicotine powder or nicotine salt which is then absorbed into the bloodstream. Different brands offer different concentrations of nicotine as well as different flavors.

ZYN Branding Concerns

ZYN is a brand of nicotine pouches that has gained significant attention online, and some of its marketing strategies may be especially appealing to young people. Parents should be aware that the product is often promoted as something that can be used “anywhere” because it is smoke-free, and it is frequently described with words like “simple” and “fresh,” which can make it seem low-risk or harmless to teens.

Much of the product’s popularity is driven by social media trends. Viral videos and online personalities sometimes promote nicotine pouches in ways that make them appear trendy or socially desirable. You may also hear youth using slang terms like “Zynbabwe,” “Zynnies,” “lip pillow,” or “upper decker.” These playful nicknames can normalize and glamorize nicotine use, making it feel like a shared cultural trend rather than a potentially addictive substance. If teens are using or talking about these terms, it may signal exposure to or interest in nicotine pouches.

Parents should also be aware of the brand’s customer rewards program. Users can submit proof of purchase to earn points that can be redeemed for merchandise such as outdoor gear, appliances, or branded clothing. Programs like these are designed to make purchasing feel rewarding and can encourage repeated use — something that may be especially appealing to young people who enjoy collecting points or branded items.

Public Health Concerns

Nicotine in general stands as a major public health risk. Nicotine pouches share similarities with vapes, including high concentrations of nicotine and appealing flavors. Nicotine pouches can contain anywhere from one to 16 milligrams of nicotine per pouch, which is an equivalent of four to five cigarettes per pouch. The long-term effects of nicotine pouches are relatively unknown compared to what is known about chewing tobacco; however, short-term physical health risks are already being observed in pouch users, including gum recession and irritation, tooth decay, and increased heart rate and blood pressure. Studies done on these pouches show that more than half of these products contain carcinogens and/or cancer-causing chemicals. Youth use of nicotine in general is dangerous and can disrupt the formation of the brain, as well as leading to dependence and escalating symptoms of anxiety and depression.
