Empowering Youth to Make Healthier Choices

The Farmington Valley Health District is proud to announce that we have received funding from the Tobacco Health and Trust Fund through a contract with the Connecticut Department of Public Health. This funding will enable us to offer multiple programs designed to support youth in our communities as they navigate current trends and make healthier decisions for their future.

We will continue to partner with schools to offer the American Lung Association’s INDEPTH (Intervention for Nicotine Dependence: Education, Prevention, Tobacco, and Health) curriculum, which provides an alternative for students who face suspension for violations of school vaping or tobacco use policies. Instead of solely focusing on punitive measures, INDEPTH is an interactive program that teaches students about nicotine dependence while encouraging healthier choices and positive alternatives.

In addition, beginning in January we will offer N-O-T (Not on Tobacco), the American Lung Association’s teen smoking/vaping cessation program designed for youth ages 13 to 19. It helps teens who want to quit by providing the tools, information, and support to quit for good. Over the 10-session program, participants will learn to identify their reasons for smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco, explore healthy alternatives to tobacco use, recognize people who can support them in their efforts to quit, and develop effective tools to prepare for and sustain their quit journey.
