Be Ready Before It Happens: Prepare Now for Any Emergency

As September approaches, so does National Preparedness Month—a time to highlight the importance of being ready for emergencies before they happen. Whether it’s a public health crisis, natural disaster, power outage, or extreme weather event, preparation can make a critical difference in how you, your family, and your community stay safe. Emergencies can strike without warning. Taking a few simple steps today can protect your loved ones and give you peace of mind for tomorrow.

📦 Build Your Emergency Kit

Every home should have an emergency supply kit that can sustain you and your family for at least 72 hours. Essentials include:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First-aid supplies
  • Medications and medical devices
  • Copies of important documents
  • Cell phone chargers and backup power
  • Hygiene items and masks

Don’t forget supplies for pets, babies, or older adults who may need extra care.

📞 Make a Family Communication Plan

If disaster strikes, how will you get in touch with your family? Create a communication plan that includes:

  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Meeting locations (one nearby, one outside your neighborhood)
  • An out-of-town contact everyone can check in with
  • A list of local shelters or evacuation routes

🌐 Stay Informed

Sign up for local alerts! Social media can be useful—but always verify information from official sources such as federal (FEMA, CDC, NWS), State (Governor’s Office, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security) and Local (Public Health, Emergency Management) entities.

🏘️ Prepare as a Community

Neighbors helping neighbors can save lives. Reach out to those who may need extra help—especially seniors, people with disabilities, or families with young children.

Join community groups that aid in response activities when disaster strikes.  The Farmington Valley Health District is always looking for volunteers to assist with local public health emergency responses.  If you are interested, scan here or follow this link: https://forms.office.com/r/bjmhDF6B6t

A connected community is a more resilient one!

This September—and every month—make preparedness a priority. By planning ahead, you’re not just protecting yourself; you’re strengthening your whole community. Emergencies are inevitable. How we respond is up to us.
