Public Swimming Pools & Public Swimming Areas
What We Do
FVHD permits and inspects all public swimming pools within our 10-member towns to ensure water quality and safe swimming conditions, including but not limited to:
- Water clarity
- Chlorine and pH levels
- Proper signage
- Safety equipment
- Chemical storage
- Cleanliness and sanitation of pool area(s) and bathrooms/locker rooms.
Examples of public swimming pools are swimming facilities located at country clubs, condominiums/apartment complexes, schools, town owned recreation areas, camps, hotels, and gyms. All public swimming pools must comply with the Connecticut Public Health Code and FVHD pool regulations to operate.
FVHD collects samples of public swimming areas within the district. These include ponds, lakes, or other bodies of fresh water. Sampling is usually conducted from Memorial Day through Labor Day for sanitary water quality. Areas that have repeated elevated bacterial levels are closed to the public until the water is resampled and found to be at safe levels.
