Submitting Ticks

Home > Popular Searches > Submitting Ticks

Residents from the District can submit ticks directly to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station for testing of the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station collects black-legged “deer ticks” for analysis. Click here to learn more about Lyme Disease.

Please follow these guidelines prior to submitting ticks:

  • Only engorged black-legged “deer" ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are tested for the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. “Dog ticks” will not be tested. Click here to determine the difference between the two. All other ticks may be submitted for identification purposes only.
  • Try to keep the tick alive. Place in a small airtight container with a few blades of green grass.
  • Place dead ticks in a small zipper lock plastic bag or clear plastic vial with a tight fitting lid. Do not put ticks in alcohol, black film canisters, or on cellophane tape.
  • Package the ticks in crush-proof envelopes or containers for mailing.
  • Include the following information with each tick: name of person bitten by tick, age and sex of the person bitten, date on which the tick was found, part of the body where the tick was found, and the town in which the tick was acquired.
  • Each tick must be accompanied by a submission form.
